Dear fellow 206ers

I am a 21 year old male driving a box standard 60 bhp 206 and I have just booked my practical test so looking at insurance and just received a quote for 3500 now I know I am a "new, young and male" driver but I still have genuine Peugeot steel wheel covers I have 0 points on my licence but still a rediculas quote can anybody my age or younger please please please help me out I've tried adding my mum (40 yr old with 9yr NBC) both as main driver and additional driver. Help mee I'm at my whits end

How are you getting quotes? Do you use a comparison site? It makes sense for it to be high as you would only just have passed your test but I used to drive a 1.8l bravo when I was 19 fully comp and it cost 1200. Is the vehicle being parked on the road or in a garage. What do you do as a job? These are all things that have an affect.

Did you use a comparison site for the quote?
Have you tried a black box insurance? If you don't drive at night, drive to the proper standard and don't exceed the mileage, it can work out a cheap way to build up your no claims.

I wouldn't put your mum as main driver unless she's going to drive the car more than you. It's called fronting and will render your insurance invalid.

Peugeot 206 + young male driver who is yet to pass there test = insurance company see a very high risk of a total loss claim sooner or later going on what the insurance industry know about 206's with a young person behind the wheel

You have basically picked the wrong car for cheap insurance, you need to think outside the box & pick something a young male wouldn't normally own / drive.

I would hate to think how many total loss & own fault claims the insurance industry has paid out on 206's piloted by younger drivers, I bet the total figure is frightening Shocked

Thats quite expensive for a 21 year old. I'm paying £3400 but that's because i'm 18 and the main driver on my policy. Where you live also plays a big factor in how much your insurance is.

It's also good to remember that you will get expensive quotes as you've just passed. Wait a couple of months and the quotes will drop. I was getting 7k-8k quotes when I first passed. Waited 4 months and the quotes dropped quite a lot.

If I think of anything else, i'll be sure to add it to my post.

I agree with this to a certain extent. You're 21 so you don't have to buy a car with a small engine. You could try looking at a Mondeo or something like that.

Thanks for your replies and I've considered black box but due to doing shift work it may mess me up and I don't always stick to the speed limit but don't exceed 10%+2 (police fresh hold according to AA advanced motering course)

What do points make .... Pedestrians that is the best anti speed campaign I have heard ever haha better than killing of the children one. And I am a confident driver as I have my licence for a lot of agricultural licences so accidents with my experience shouldn't be a problem

Keep your licence clean, build up the no claims bonus & your insurance premium will soon start dropping Wink

So the faster HDI is actually cheaper to insure then the slower petrol version of the same car, shows insurance companies don't work on speed / performance Wink

Wonder what a Laguna II 1.9 DCi would work out at - only issue is owning one is like owning a hand grenade with the pin removed Laughing

During my first year I was with Bell insurance had a box, there's no curfew and at 17 I got my first year at (£2000) may be worth looking at

Because they are the scum of the earth .. just behind estate agents (or maybe in front now!)

It's also one way to avoid them picking up the risk but without refusing you insurance. If they did that you would have to declare it and you would never get insured ...

While you are a learner, you can just be a named driver on an adult's insurance ... get your Mum to insure it as the main driver and you as a named one ... after all you aren't able to use it all the time without an adult with you. Note that she can only have her NCB on one car if you have two or more. That should be under £1000 even with you on it for a year .. but once you pass your test, you have problems ...

Insurance companies also differ on named drivers. One I used wanted my 18 year old as the named driver on the 206 even though he was at Uni most of the year, walked to work when home for hols, and I used car most days for business! Needless to say, they got dumped ... Found Aviva and LV= most understanding and could cope with me having two cars and him only on one ...

There are companies that specialise in younger drivers ... but I'm not 100% sure about just internet based ones ... try specialist broker's. Also try Prestige on 0800 3308057 or 0333 4001580 from a mobile that offer club deals and may recognised this forum as one (they do discounts for the 206CC forum members).
