My wee old diesel 206 playing up.
Starting it after it has been sitting for around 8 hours is getting impossible.
When turning the starter, it sounds like only the engine is turning over.
Having the starter running for 30 seconds, and still not even trying to start, no smoke.
Sometimes I'm turning it over that much, that after 3 or 4, 30 second attempts, my battery gets too low, needing a jump start. Jump starting can even take a few 30 second attempts.
You can hear it's about to start as the engine tone changes, get a bit of smoke, then say 10-15 seconds later car starts and idles fine.
Would the car use the glow plugs, if it's 15 'c?
Once it starts, can turn off after 10 min, and will restart straight away anytime I try during the next 4 hours or so.
Been like this for last 2 weeks.
I've tried the hand prime pump, doesn't help it start any quicker.
Had just over half tank of diesel, been difficult to start.
Air filter and oil changed few months ago, still look fine.
Fuel filter was done about a 18 months ago.
Removed battery, all cells full, multimeter showing 12 odd volts before start, 14 odd while running, 13 odd after engine not long turned off.
Cannot see any diesel leaking out.
Cannot see any air bubbles in the pipes while trying to start, once car is idling I take a quick look, sometimes see a few small bubbles.
Car drives fine, doesn't seem to have lost any power.
Just this damn cold starting. And the weather isn't really that cold just now.
Any ideas?

Beru are the best glow plugs for this engine.
Have you checked the glow plugs are all working correctly?

Diesel donkey sounds about right
Nope not checked the glow plugs. A bit worried about taking them out as I'm sure they have been in a while and really don't want to break anything. Is there a way to check them while still fitted, by using a basic multimeter? There is 12v going to them with ignition on.
But do you think it really needs them with the weather at the moment, 15-18'c?
#4: Re: 1.9 diesel cold start Author: southwestchap, Location: DevonPosted: Wed May 21, 2014 3:18 am ---- Bit of a lash up way of basic testing is to undo the 8mm nuts on the ends, then strike a positive feed accross the top of them to see if they spark. If they do then they are taking power. Ideally you would take them out and test them on the battery.
By the sound of it you have at least 2 down.
The 1.9 is Indirect Injection. It will always need heat.

Pulled them out, eventually. Read somewhere putting a little diesel and leaving it helps.
Used set of jump leads and spare battery to get them to glow, no joy. Took out the one the multimeter said was fine, can see it looks newer, few seconds power from battery and it's glowing.
So pretty convinced have 3 dead.
Get new ones in tomorrow.
The diesel pump is a Lucas. Is there anything on it for bleeding air?

I know most of the 1.9 diesel donkeys have a black bulb like hand primer under the bonnet - not all of them have it fitted though!.

Done the 4 glow plugs...
Still won't start.
They are getting 12v till the relay clicks them off.
There is no smoke, making me think there is no fuel?
The immobiliser on fuel pump was bypassed few years ago, just has one wire going the the solenoid on it. What should the voltage be on this?
When I check it, ignition off, the wire is negative 12.
Ignition on 2nd position and turning over, no voltage.
From what I can read on internet, this wire to a solenoid on a bypassed fuel pump should be positive 12 when ignition on?
Confused by this solenoid.
How should it work, power to solenoid pull the plunger part into solenoid to let fuel thru?
Or power to it push the plunger out to stop fuel?

Give it 12v direct from the battery +, (i presume you can see the solenoid (or at least access the wire feeding it)) you should hear a noticeable click when you strike it with 12v. If so, turn the key, heat the glow-plugs and see if it fires.
If so, you know that the pump solenoid feed is dodgy.
I believe that it lifts the plunger inside the solenoid (effectively an electro magnet)
Let us know how you get on.

Was just out for closer look at the solenoid. Not got a big enough socket to get it out.
It's powered from one of the old immobiliser wires.
Wire is negative 12 with ignition off.
Took off the wire.
12v from battery no click. So what harm would a few taps to it do. 12v again, could hear it click.
Turn key tried to start straight away then cut out - probably my fault for getting air in fuel line.
Few more attempts got it idling.
Checked the old wire again, now 12 volts.
Turned off, put back together, idles and revs fine.
So need to get this solenoid, anyone know what size it is on the Lucas pump?
Looks all copper coloured, with blue top.
Also think it's now taking in a bit of air, sometimes get a few little bubbles thru pipe when revving it.
I had taken a look at the fuel filter yesterday, seems clean, housing full of diesel.
Going to take it a drive see how it is.

Keeping an eye on the fuel pipes, looks dry around the filter.
Glow plugs made big difference, one turn of key after light out an fires straight away.
Should have done them earlier but was worried about breaking them, a little diesel left to soak helped loosen them.
Just need to get hold of the solenoid, think the wire to it is ok.
