Turbo? But it boosts well and doesn't smoke at all.
Alternator? But it slows with the engine, whereas the whine 'hangs' for a bit.
PAS pump? Same as alternator, it should slow quickly.
AC pump? Don't think so as I turn the AC on half way through the vid and it makes no difference.
Car has done 85k miles, but been sitting for months due to a starting fault.
So what do you reckon the whine is?

I was under the impression that the 206 got a solid pulley to stop it failing as well?

Remove the aux belt and see if the noise is still there. Only a 10 min job.

I can't think how anything aux related would still be spinning once the revs drop though? As the whine hangs a few seconds after. Is it alright to run these with the aux belt off? I've only had pre-plex HDis so far and wasn't sure if running without the alternator would affect the BSI at all?
Car is a 52 plate, phase 1 I believe with frosted headlights. I didn't realise the older ones still used the rubberised pulley so thanks for the info. How can it whine though?
This is what happened to the one on my current HDi btw...it was only 18 months old! Don't buy pattern pulleys lol.

I've also found the problem - its the alternator. Unlike previous HDi's I've had, the 206 alternator uses a one way clutch, meaning it over-runs slightly after the revs drop. But now I don't know if this is just normal alternator noise that would usually be masked by engine noise, or if there's actually a fault?

I've had these alternator clutch pulley's fail on some VW applications I've worked on.
Special tools needed to remove the pulley from the alternator due to the clutch, the tools are pretty cheap to buy.

yes the can go faulty on all vehicles fitted with a alternator clutch pully
I recommend exhaust unlimited for parts
probity ebay for pully extractor tool( machine mart dosnt keep it on the shelf but can order them in)
if needed if fitted immediately cvs will help, its a 2minute job

It's looking like the 206 may not be staying with me now anyway, its got more faults than are worth fixing for me unfortunately, and the alternator pulley is another to add to the list lol.
