REALLY loud engine noise when idle
-> 206 Problems

#1: REALLY loud engine noise when idle Author: MattBurrows PostPosted: Tue Jul 01, 2014 10:46 am
    ----
Hi

I occasionally get a huge noise from under the bonnet when the engine has been idle for a period of time (such as traffic lights)

I have 20 days warranty left but have no idea what the problem is and cant explain it to the dealer.

it is a 54 plate 1.1 independence.

The noise is a big deep whirring sound (like a spitfire engine) and can be stopped by switching the engine off and back on again.

I have no idea what it is but am scared to let it happen for longer than a few seconds as it sounds properly wrong.

it does it a couple of times a day when using normally

PLEASE HELP ?

it sounds like your radiator fan, does it usually kick in when the temps up?
check the fan is secure start the car and let it idle with the bonnet open and watch to see if its the noise of the fan when it kicks in, if it is this is normal
if not take it back too see if they can check if for you as its still under warranty,
hope this helps

Thanks Denners..

It is when it is hot, so i suppose it could be the fan. but this noise is is worse than anything i have ever heard on any other car.

I am sure not every 206 sounds like death when the fan kicks in though.

Could the fan bearings be worn out?

You suppose it could be the fan? Have you checked yet? I won't be worried if it's a bit noisy when the fun cuts in. The youngest 206 is be what, about 9 years old? Hardly new and quiet like a modern car.

You shouldn't switch the engine off with the fan on either, wait until it cuts out first.

Thanks Lecktorious.

I am new to driving and didn't realize a fan could be SO loud. It sounds like nothing i have ever heard in anyone's car ever, old or new.

It is secure, but I think it might be worn out or damaged in some way so will get the garage to check it out and see what they say.

I won't switch the engine off when it happens next, It's just scary loud.

It confused me as it only happens when the engine is idle, never while actually moving. Does this sound normal?

When you are driving air is flowing onto your radiator, keeping the engine cool. When you are sitting stationary there is no moving air so the fan cuts in to stop the engine from overheating. Once the engine is cool enough the fans will cut back off.

Haha.

Sounds pretty obvious now. In that case it's not really anything to worry about.

I'm still going to take it in to see if the fan is performing as it should, but i feel a lot better knowing what it is.

Otherwise i'm LOVING my little car.

Cheers guys Very Happy
