Power drops off then kicks back in (higher revs)

Morning,

Picked up my girlfriends car on Sunday (206 roland garros 1.6 - 8v I think judging by the tax bands on Parkers) and on the way back, doing around 50-60 in 4th the power would drop off then kick back in like it's just realised it'd forgotten for a few seconds that your foot's on the accellerator. Didn't happen in 5th when I was driving but was too sudden to be her right foot causing the problem, and she was nowhere near the clutch.

Given how sudden it is I'm thinking it may be clutch related - it's like it's been partially pushed down the dumped - although searches throw up mentions of ECUs and all sorts. It also has a crappy (but not inconsistent) idle but that's probably a separate issue.

Any similar issues or ideas anybody can throw at me would be appreciated, as I'm going to try and blitz a few issues in one go this weekend (bulb covers, door straps, odo bulb, washers jet, speedo issues, and switch that cigarette lighter to switched live).

Cheers,
Tom

Sounds familiar, my identical car has a habit of suddenly dropping off, then catching itself and revving, usually at idle or on a very light throttle. Got gradually worse and has now died a couple of times at idle. Not the clutch, listening under the bonnet it's the idle control valve closing itself, revs die, then obviously responds to that and yanks itself wide open effectively bypassing the throttle and revving the engine before settling back down. So at idle it sounds like it's clearing it's throat, on the move it's like a miss, then a little surge. Mine doesn't do it on an open throttle though. Changed the icv, no change, thinking throttle position sensor or MAP maybe? If not then ECU at which point it's definitely bye bye I reckon.

Cheers for all the info, the symptoms sound similar enough that the cause may well be the same. I'd feared it may be a 'any one of these things' situation!

I'm hoping to run diagnostics - counting on the fact my dads friend may be able to do it as '99 = no OBD port. I'll let you know if I make any progress. I'm starting to think the 1.6's aren't all that common, searches here don't throw up too many results!
