Lower Suspension Ball joint

So I just failed my MOT because the ball "is shot" and the socket is liekly to be damaged and has been "for some time". This came from an independent MOT centre.

I recently had a full service and they replaced the front discs. Surely as part of this it should have been spotted?

The mechanic wouldn't have a bar to test for ball joint play on a routine service, if I was doing a service I would pull on the wheels to check for play. On an MOT you have to use a large bar to lever the tyre to check for play. It may not have been enough to notice when just pulling on the wheel

Thanks. The MOT guy said it was that bad I should avoid driving on it! The ball is damaged and he recommended I probably need the socket replacing too. For the service they took the wheels off for balancing and also did the discs.

Seems like you would have noticed it when your driving if it's as bad as the inspectors said Confused . Does it feel loose when you hit a bump? Any noise?

replace the lower arm, piece of cake. cut the old one off near the ball joint socket, line the new one up with the 2 bolts in sub frame, and swear like a trooper praying the new 1 drops in first time into the hub assembly

Can't say I've noticed anything. maybe when cornering tightly in carparks etc. a bit of noise.

He told me not to drive far on it for my own safety. He has no incentive to lie as they don't do repairs. He just said get it check asap.

I asked about the drivers side and he said that seemed solid. I haven't noticed any imbalance but then I'm not sure how it would manifest.

I'd get it replaced if that was to pop out whilst going around a roundabout you'd end up having an accident
