Rear Axle change & ABS sensor issue

#1: Rear Axle change & ABS sensor issue Author: sneakyvtr PostPosted: Tue Sep 02, 2014 4:54 am
    ----
Hi,

I recently changed the rear axle on my 2002 206 GTI. The axle was a reconditioned one off an 2005 model with ABS. Ever since I have had problems with the ABS sensors. It seems peugeot changed the type of sensors they used on the cars - my old one had the old blue square connectors but the new axle had the newer more rounded rectangle style connector.

I tried putting the old style connector on the newer type of sensor but the system was recognising them as being unplugged - so I bit the bullet and bought two of the older type sensors from euro car parts. Fitted them and
cleared the "braking fault" and "abs fault" errors through PP2000 which caused the light to go off. I can drive about 100 meters before the system flashes the errors back up along with the STOP light and annoying beep on the dash.

When monitoring the sensors live on PP2000 I can see both rear wheels are registering as not moving. Both reluctor rings are not cracked and are in good condition.

Could this be because the old sensors will not work with the newer type of axle? Any help appreciated i've spent about 15 hours on this now and I want a car free of faults and warning lights!

Thanks,
Charles

i think you need a matching pairs of abs sensor and hubs.

Thanks Seabook - would it be a bolt on/off job? Or would it take some work to get the old style hub to fit the new axle?

simple on/off job. If you got a hubs puller.

Because i think from 2002 the ABS changed from tooth ring to magnetic pickup. So even you swap the abs sensor it won't pick up the signal correctly.

Would you recommend getting one? There is a laser branded one on halfords website for £13 odd quid I think

laser was alright.

I didn't use the manual hubs puller. I got the hydraulic one.

I'll give that a go then! I have been quoted £39 plus VAT each side does that sound about right?

I had the exact same problem as you when I changed my beam for a old model. I tried the same as you, changing plug, buying sensors and then found out that the hubs needed to match.

Brought the cheapest hub possible, they lasted around 6 months before I had to change them. £39 sounds about right for a half decent hub.

I would recommend selling the beam and buying the correct beam with the correct hubs and ABS

i got the complete hubs unit from dealer. i think is about 60-80 quid per side.

I don't normally trust cheap hubs...If your hubs failed you will see your wheel overtake you lol

I'll give the older style hubs a go then.

Do the abs ECU's read mixed hubs and sensors. I.E toothed on the rear and magnetic on the front or would they all have to match? I had a quick look on the front and I can't see a toothed reluctor ring which is peculiar suggesting it is a magnetic ring I need but with the old style connector? Haven't seen any of these about

EDIT: the car was a £380 eBay bargain. It's done 132k and is currently a commuter to get me about. What effect would unplugging the abs connector from the pump do? Would it continue to throw me up errors or would it simply disable the ABS unit and eliminate the dashboard errors - this or something similar would be a far cheaper and less time consuming solution for me as ABS isn't a high priority for myself.

front is always tooth....
the front abs ring is on the drive shaft.

If you unplug the abs pump then the abs warning light will be on.

Back with an update for anyone who may come across this in the future.

The sensors and hubs did not match, so with a pair of toothed rear hubs and matching sensors the problem was resolved.
