#1: Anyone else with a 1.4 Hdi? Author: badj, Location: Wiltshire PostPosted: Sun Sep 21, 2014 1:16 pm

Just interested because it's been a while since I last worked on one - mines done over 200k and I've done some necessary bits here and there (servicing, new injector seals and so on).

It's had an annoying resonating rattle and drove more likea TUD 1.5, so I pulled the cat off earlier and found it was buggered (honeycomb was loose and rattling inside).

One quite clearout and replacement later, I can actually hear the turbo spooling. Didn't test drive it, couldn't be arsed, but undoubtably it'll drive different now I'm sure of that.

Anyway, just curious to see what it compares to anyone else's at idle? I guess most people will have half the mileage, so was curious as to whether it sounds similar or louder in comparison. It's a diesel, sure, but I can't recall as to whether they're normally a bit less "taxi"at idle.

I have one on 177k miles now. Probably sound the same as what you show in the video.

Doesn't show idle really, but you can hear the difference a straight pipe will do, my cat had done the same.

End of the day its a little engine that's done a lot of miles, the valve-train is going to have a little more tolerance on it now.

Keep on top the oil changes with good quality oil and should last a good few miles more.

What exhaust did you put on your 1.4hdi southwestchap?

Stock mid system (as thats straight through already albeit a little on the small side) downpipe has been de-catted and the rear box is a GTI one which has been gutted and a straight pipe welded in (effectively a straight pipe)

The rear box is very restrictive on these.

Plans for a bigger system are in the pipeline at the moment.

Given it a blast today, the tappets seem to intermittantly lose pressure before 2000 rpm, gain and go silent again for about 400rpm, then are loud until just over 3000 rpm again.

The EGR had caked everything, so blanked it off, but it's still had 200k + of EGR gunk and the last owner did at least 40k without changing the oil, so I'm sure the hydraulic lifters could do with a change. I did change the oil very recently, but as you'd expect it went black and murky pretty much straight away due to the amount of crap lingering around in the engine with all that mileage.

I'd hope the tappets would clear up with good use and maintenance, but I'm not so sure

Just to revisit this, wanted to ask a little more on the subject.

The engine is pretty loud, sounds a bit like an old Transit - thing is, it only does it with throttle and under load - around the range of the turbo it quietens signficantly (between 2000-3000 rpm) but has an occasional moment of rattleyness again.

Although I know the bottom pulley makes a similar sound, if you apply more throttle then the sound goes again - similar if you let off the throttle (i.e. decelerating) the sound goes.

This leads me to think that the injectors are worn - the fire seals and sleeves have been replaced. The MPG isn't too bad, but perhaps it should be a little better as per the performance.

Not sure whether to bother swapping them over - it's not worth the cost for new, but too many on ebay seem to be a bit too haphazardly thrown in a box and look to probably be a bit mishandled to be worth buying, as is the delicacy of the injector nozzles.

Any suggestions? Can't decide if it's worth doing or not.

Tried an oil flush?

For injectors I'd just stick a large does of redex in with about half a tank of fuel ...

Had a go with Redex, didn't do much (nor was I expecting it to).

Starts with half a turn and runs reasonably well, just the sound that's doing my nut in - made worse by the fact that it goes quite quiet between 2k - 3k rpm.

As I said previously, if you have a heavier right foot it quietens down, but isn't related to mpg - either the seals aren't quite as good as they could be (even though I replaced them) or the injectors are just worn.

Mine's pretty tappy ... I just live with it as it's done about 120K. Also has a whine which I think might be the alternator bearings ...

I'm nearer double that now. It drives fine, just annoying that I can't hear if there's any other issues with the engine due to the diesel knock drowning out any other noise.

Mine too is also rather noisey sounds like a tractor if not worse. Also it's at 120k. I haven't had any problems with it since I've had it (3years) other then the cat witch I had to smash out. Passed every single mot. Although there is a slight knocking coming form somewhere. Great little car really.

I had one of these, and when it was idling it had a tappety noise and a bit of a rumble - it was the alternator clutch pulley. Worth looking at.

The knocking on mine is probably the arms or/and the roll bar linkage, only does it when driving down a bumpy road.....manly all roads then really being England.

Lol

I'm also reasonably sure I have a worn engine mount as the engine kicks back an awful lot, so that probably doesn't help.

Not a clue which one is worn but I'd assume its the belt side upper mount

Despite the noise, still seems to do well for the amount of usage it's had.

Probably going to change it soon, but here's today's journey home (140miles or so)
