#1: when cooling fan kicks in, coolant comes out expansion tank Author: cat41, Posted: Wed Nov 05, 2014 7:09 pm ---- Hi all, took a bit of a risk on a GT a few weeks back, the risk paid off up till now.
The car will flow coolant out of the expansion tank everevery time the fan kicks in, even with the cap tight, the water will flow for a few seconds then stop, i just repleced the thermostat and thats leveled the temperature to 90 or just under so thats fine. But it still flows water ever time the fan kicks in.
Its been checked for gas in the coolant and its fine, its been checked for pressure in the cooling system and fine.
I can here rumbling bearings on the water pump side, it goes in for a new water pump next week, but is it the pump. the engine runs great, its not keep on idle but i,m sure its the aftermarket pipes, lack of back pressure ithink.

#3: Re: when cooling fan kicks in, coolant comes out expansion tank Author: cat41, Posted: Thu Nov 06, 2014 4:29 pm ---- I wonder on that one, thing is it will emty the whole expansion tank, today going to park up in my local town because i waa driving slower, time i stoped i could hear the water bubbling just like a kettle, i thought all i need is my tea bags i be well away lol. Speaking to my friend whos a mechanic hes thinking that water pump isn't pumping that well. It goes in monday, i hope it sort the problem
.

#5: Re: when cooling fan kicks in, coolant comes out expansion tank Author: cat41, Posted: Thu Nov 06, 2014 5:58 pm ---- Thanks guys, yes i will try the cap 1st, after i changed the thermostat yesterday the temperature is very stable, before it would drop down to just 70 then go up slightly then down again, now its steady 89, when its sitting in traffic at the lights it climbs slowly until around the 100 also, where the fan kicks in it brings the temperature back down nicely, but as the coolant it hot thats when it comes out the cap, i will try the new cap.,
#6: Re: when cooling fan kicks in, coolant comes out expansion tank Author: cat41, Posted: Thu Nov 06, 2014 6:10 pm ---- Just took the cap off, there's a larger rubber seal on the outter inner thing, thats ok but there's a hole in the middle and there's a small rubber ring hanging out, it wont go back in grrr.
#7: Re: when cooling fan kicks in, coolant comes out expansion tank Author: cat41, Posted: Thu Nov 06, 2014 6:25 pm ---- Just managed to push the rubber back in, now its seated, would be so funny if a small thing like a rubber ring the size of a 5p has been causing water to come out. Not sealing.
#8: Re: when cooling fan kicks in, coolant comes out expansion tank Author: copey, Location: rochdalePosted: Fri Nov 07, 2014 2:20 am ---- expansion tank cap is under £4 from pug directly

If it's not sealed it's not pressurized. Pressure keeps coolant from boiling longer (to higher temperatures).
But if sealed and it gets too hot, something will give (see Mythbusters and hot water heaters ) Might be that that piece is designed to be a/the weak point in the system and that at some point your car got really hot?
#10: Re: when cooling fan kicks in, coolant comes out expansion tank Author: cat41, Posted: Fri Nov 07, 2014 8:11 am ---- Just seen how to check the cooling system on the net, just started the car up, there's 2 large pipes 1 is where the thermostat is and there's another pipe just below that, now the engine started to warm up, the bottom pipe stayed stone cold and it felt that there's no pressure in it, the pipe where the thermostat is warmed up nicely, after 10 minutes the bottom pipe stayed the same, the radiator warmed up, just been chatting to my friend the mechanic and hes confident the water pump isn't working.
What you think on this guys?
#11: Re: when cooling fan kicks in, coolant comes out expansion tank Author: cat41, Posted: Fri Nov 07, 2014 10:00 am ---- Well i,m smug as, just looked how to fix cooling problems on net, so i tried to bleed the system, there was loads of air in the system, no more water coming out of the expansion tank and with the fix i did on the cap its runing spot on now, made up a homemade large expansion tank to fit into cars expansion tank, worked a treat.

So you didn't bleed the system when you changed the thermostat?
#13: Re: when cooling fan kicks in, coolant comes out expansion tank Author: cat41, Posted: Fri Nov 07, 2014 12:03 pm ---- Thats was doing it long before the thermostat change, i did bleed or try but never saw the heater matrix bleed screw, just been out, its loosing coolant somewhere, the heating in the car goes off after a few miles, just checked coolant in tank ands its nearly gone, its a wonder why its got air in the system due to running low on coolant all the time.
#14: Re: when cooling fan kicks in, coolant comes out expansion tank Author: cat41, Posted: Sat Nov 08, 2014 9:47 am ---- All that work yesterday paid off, coolant system working spot on with no leaks.
The expansion tank makes it too difficult to see the level of the coolant so i knocked up a simple thing to check the levels and it works realy well.
#15: Re: when cooling fan kicks in, coolant comes out expansion tank Author: Project2062014, Location: CornwallPosted: Sat Nov 08, 2014 2:29 pm ---- If its boiling water then head gasket ! If its blowing water out expansion tank .head gasket .
Sucks air in thou broken gasket and blows it out the water from expansion tank . My engine's could run with out the cap on and water not be pushed out .
If you over fill expansion tank then water is blown out the exhaust .
