Plan is to take them right back to metal, refurb them properly and then decide what I want to do with them (Spray - what colour? or Hydrodip)

I definitely think the worng primer was used, or it wasn't sanded back slightly before painting. It seems very shiny on the exposed areas
The rims haven't even been filed, let alone filled and sanded.
So to work then! I think there are several colours on these wheels, so sanding could take a while...
As for colour, I would say that depends on the colour of your car, but why not get a body shop to do it? Its roughly £25-£30 a corner for a wheel refurb these days.
Dipping would provide a nice finish providing it isnt poverty spec carbon dipping! My own 2cents of course.

I want to do it myself as a project, if it were the only set of wheels I had, I'd get a bodyshop to do it.
Car is EZR Silver - thinking either white or a Dark Purple?

Not a huge fan of white wheels on silver cars and they're a nightmare to keep clean unless you use them as a summer set only. Dark purple could be nice and defiantly different from the norm.
Not sure of your own refurb experience all I would say is use a sander unless you like sore hands and a loss of any sort of finger print invest in some quality finishing paper to.
There isn't really any need to go back to mental just back to original primer would be fine, a flat correctly keyed surface is all you need you get a decent primer coat down but entirely up to you mate.
Oh and that time frame you had in mind?.. Double it

Need light 1mm coats all even .
Watch for the light reflection off the paint .

Will standard bodywork primer be sufficient? Does the factory baked finish have any effect on primer adhesion?
#7: Re: Operation Nimrod Author: Vexs, Location: LondonPosted: Fri Jan 23, 2015 11:58 am ---- Standard primer is fine but you'll need a base coat of etch primer if you're going back to metal and you'll definitely need it to cover any of the repair work you do.
If you do have access to a sander and have plenty of time then going back to metal is ideal (not essential) but at least if it goes wrong it'll be your fault and not a previous sprayers shoddy work.
If you don't have time then enquire for prices at a local sand blasters, they're surprisingly cheap for what they're worth and your guaranteed a paint free alloy.

Getting there with the sanding. Delayed due to cold weather and going on holiday. As you can see, lots of different paints and primers on these over the years. So far I have identified:
Black (cocked up coat)
Grey Primer
Anthracite/similar colour
Black
Red
Yellow
Grey (Primer?)
Yellow
White Powder Coat
Fun Fun Fun! Hopefull now the weather is warmer and lighter I can get the final 1 and a half wheels done and be filling within the next couple of weeks.
Got one more to sand the filler down to flat on, but 3 have been smoothed, and etch-primed. Etch primer has shown up a couple of level differences I didn't see originally so these will be filled and sanded before a second coat of etch.
And before anyone says it, the valves were toast anyway, they need new ones, so I will be cutting them off shortly (but was short a stanley blade at the time of priming!)

I need to get the tape measure out to check the offset as the Ouragans off the 406 are an ET20 I believe...
