#1: Problem getting in to 1st Author: daninmanchester, Posted: Mon Feb 23, 2015 11:49 am ---- My gear box sometimes feels a bit "sticky" when trying to get in to first.
It seems better when stationary or at lower speed, but that could be circumstantial.
At first I thought I had got sloppy with the clutch, but I've been more aware and know where my clutch is and also that I dont have the same problem in other gears. Certainly seems to be engaging properly etc. no slips etc.
Could it be something simple like oil level in the gear box? If so how easy is it to check?
Is it something more serious like a problem with the gear bearings, gear itself or the syncro maybe?
What else could it be?

Your not trying to engage 1st gear while your still moving?

Check the level with the bung on the end casing (19mm)
Drain via the 21mm bung on the bottom of the diff casing

How likely is it the oil given that it only seems to affect first?
Another possibly unrelated symptom is that when coasting in gear no power at around 20 to 30mph it kind of feels like is sticking and holding back . like tugging. gears sticking due to oil? bearings? engine timing?

Someone suggested £400 if I need the gear box stripping / a reconditioned one.
Would be nice if it was just oil, but given the reverse bearings sound a bit dodgy I suspect it could be more serious.
I only need it to last 6-12 months more and I'll scrap it.
I was doing some tests this morning at various speeds.
When stationary with certainty of no momentum in the system it is pretty smooth to get in to any gear (for a peugeot).
At any other speed all gears are selectable apart from first.
When trying to select first there is a delay between pressing the clutch and being able to select.
If I hold the clutch long enough at any speed I can select first.
I'm not mechanically minded but is that not indicative of momentum in the system and the syncro not spinning the gear up?
That said there is no grinding, it just refuses to budge.

So you shouldn't be selecting it when moving or, if you are, you need to pause and take time to get it into gear.

I never tried my tests prior to the problem, so I guess that could be a false reading and maybe that was always the case, but something has definitely changed. The test replicates the issue though.
I'm having to be aware and it's broken my whole natural rhythm at junctions.
