1.4 8v cut out and won't start

#1: 1.4 8v cut out and won't start Author: yglx PostPosted: Fri Feb 27, 2015 8:48 am
    ----
Was driving along and just changing down into first when the car was almost stationary and the engine cut out. I tried to start the engine again and it was turning over as if the battery was flat.

When I bought the car I was told it had a new battery and alternator. I can see that the alt is new but battery doesn't look too new. I've waited a while and it's still not starting at all or even turning over properly so I've took the battery off the car and I'm now charging it and praying this is all that's wrong. I'll post I'd it still doesn't work. If it still turns over slowly and as if it has a flat battery when it's fully hanged what else can I look at? Cheers

Battery seems to be charging so I guess that I had a flat battery...but the car started absolutely fine this morning and when car wouldnt start all electrics like windows were working normally but it doesn't explain why it cut out in the first place....I'm going to see if this fully charged battery will hopefully start the car. If not I'm doomed and if so ill have to look into why the engine stalled

Hi everyone I got the car to start and drive BUT when it started it sounded very rough and tappy. I opened the bonnet to see the alternator pulley was sparking. It drove home ok and when I got it home I then popped the bonnet to see if the problem was still occurring and it wasn't producing sparks any more but it did some rougher than it used to before this break down which I can only assume is the alternator incorrectly fitted? I really need some help and advice on this guys thank you

Never heard of sparks from the pulley before unless the bearing has gone, which is usually caused by the belt being over tightened and putting pressure on one side of the bearing or bending the spindle.

Definitely sounds like the alternator has gone though. Even a partially charged battery will operate the windows, lights etc, but won't have enough power to start the car. As the battery starts dying, it won't have the power to keep the engine running properly which is why it feels lumpy.

Service exchange unit is the best option.

I'm no longer getting any sparks etc just some funny noises from the alternator as I drive it sounds kind of tappy or tinny and increases with more room. . I guess it's been incorrectly fitted and is now completely nakkered...is it still ok to drive? And is the belt the alt is on the auxiliary belt? It looks in s**t condition. I drove about 50 miles today and the car isn't dead yet lol.
