6 months or so ago, I started noticing a metallic bang from the rear right wheel when driving over pot hols and speed bumps, it was pretty subtle at first but as time went by it began to get louder and louder to a point the whole block can hear it..
Suddenly while driving at curvy roads at normal + speeds, the rear seems to sway, causing me to almost lose control and crash unless I down shift and maneuver the car out of the turn. braking in a situation as this can be extremely dangerous as the nose will drop giving me even less grip in the rear..
about 3 weeks ago I noticed it got allot worse, now getting regularly dim thumps from the same area, including the metallic bang.
Drove to the garage, lifted the car, and saw the right shock absorber came completely loose from it's lower connection.. we pushed it back, thinking IT was the issue all along, but the same noises continued, assuring me the shock absorber wasn't the cause but an effect..
today the shock came loose again.
some points:
* The car basically feels as if the rear has no shocks, I feel every little thing on the road.
* There is a small negative camber in the right wheel.
* The right wheel seems to protrude about 1/2 an inch compared to the left wheel.
* Trying to describe the metallic bang - a metal rod hitting a metal pipe. sometimes the bang will be a double bang, with the second one a little less loud from the first one, but very close to each other.
Could this be a certain metal rod inside the rear axle?
Please guys help a fellow out.. I don't want to spend allot of money on a new axle for nothing, but I also don't want to crash...

Forgot to mention, the mechanic did tell me it seems as the axle needs replacing, but he didn't seem 100% sure about it.. I trust you guys more than any mechanic out there.

Interesting.. though I'm pretty certain the issues are related to one another.
Can anyone link me to a photo\explanation of how the axle on my xsi looks on the inside? I really think I can better understand what's going on if I'll know whats inside..

Author: Oafie, Location: Glyn CeiriogPosted: Wed Mar 25, 2015 8:14 pm ---- It sounds like the trailing arm bearing has started to fail, or could be the rubber bushes that mount axle to the shell have worn. either way sounds like you could do with a recon axle or if you are feeling brave sort them out yourself, they're not expensive on ebay and if you are quite handy with the tools pretty easy to change.
have a look on youtube, plenty of video's showing how to change them.

How to cure this? New arb or regrese

even better if you want to lower it at the same time.

Sometimes they don't look too bad but the repair doesn't last. other tiimes they are obviously knackered. If you aren't handy with spanners and don't know someone who is or just want a 100% garaunteed repair the right answer in any of these situations is usually a refurbished and complete axle.
