2005 206 1.4 HDi Gearbox Rear Mount Replace

Hi all,

There is a nasty clattering knocking sound coming from the front end of the car, which sounds like metal hitting metal. Comes particularly on lightly rutted roads. I also have more of a popping sound from rear suspension, but that is a problem for another day. Car passed MOT with no advisories recently like this. Looking underneath nothing is broken or particularly loose. Front anti roll bar bushes look perished so will change these. The only thing that I can think is the real cause is the rear gearbox mount. This might explain why the gear lever is a bit slack.

Does anyone know how to get to and change the rear gearbox mount on these? It's very hard to see and I don't real know how to get access from below.

Thanks,

You sure it's not the top mounts?

Is there any sure fire way to test that? Would it not have come up during the MOT?

They can be perfectly solid enough for an mot but can male noise on bumpy roads.

Catch hold of the cam cover and push and pull the engine. If it moves a fair bit then it would suggest the lower engine mount.

I would of said droplinks, but that should of shown/felt up on MOT.

There's always plenty of movement in standard mounts.

Replace the drop links and see if it improves.

Hi, yes there is a small amount of movement for the engine. Tried also with someone prodding the accelerator with the engine running. Again a small amount of movement but not much.

ARB drop links are really tight hence I put more suspicion on the ARB bushes.

They can be tight but if the bushes are gone that's where you'll get the noise.

I best change the bushes first. Can I get away without disconnecting the drop links and just undo the clamps on the ARB to get straight at the bushes?

Yep, 18mm spanner over the top of the subframe and a female torx socket will sort it out. Failing that 13mm or 1/2" ring spanner will do it. think the 1/2" fits more snug though.
