Use head from scap engine or whole scrap engine?

#1: Use head from scap engine or whole scrap engine? Author: chazvaz PostPosted: Wed Feb 08, 2017 6:35 pm

Working on a 1.4 16v TU 55k 04 plate.
Problem - Initially was phoned about a leaking head gasket quoted and got turned down. The water pump seized about a week later and the pistons have caught all the valves. Phone goes Rolling Eyes

My Solutions -
1. I have a complete engine on standby (from a scrappys been lying on the floor, checked compression, oil pan and pulled a spark plug all seemed good) However it has definitely done more mileage than the one that's in EGR is v mucky. So i can swap engines.

2. Steal the head from the donor engine, skim it new gasket and tie bolts and put it on the current engine. new timing belt and water pump

Question.
Do you guys think that the con rods and crank will be OK on the original engine if all the valves have been hit, the exhaust v/vs are noticeably bent. Do i just suck it up and pull the engine out? My worry is that the scrappy engine is worse than the one that's in the car and ill have wasted my man hours.

I haven't posted any photos of yet but i can do if you'd like to see the state of the original head/donor engine?

A running complete unit from a crashed / damaged car would be a better option.

That would be my first option but none of the scrappys in my area had a 16v running in a car. Hundreds of 8v.

I thought about making a brace to keep the wet liners in and giving the crank a turn to try and reveal possible con rod/crank issues on the engine thats in. Just trying to get a set plan for tomorrows day at work
