Juddering and Engine Noise - Please Help

#1: Juddering and Engine Noise - Please Help Author: urby67 PostPosted: Thu Aug 24, 2017 10:51 am

I have a 55 plate 1.1 sport 206 with 52k on the clock.

Used the car daily until yesterday when it developed what i call a serious problem.

I have an engine judder, which voilently shakes the whole car, at start up, along with an engine noise (sounds like tappets) every few seconds. The revs dip and then recover, but the juddering and engine noise continue. All fluid levels are checked and ok.

On reading a lot of forums ive tried changing the coil pack and sparks, however the problem still remains.

Called roadside assistance as I cant drive it as is. He sprayed carb cleaner into air intake, no change. He wasnt happy with the tappets noise and said it sounds like the timing belt had jumped a tooth and then he left leaving me high and dry.

I decided to remove the timing belt cover and on inspection, i can flex the belt.

Ive a retired mechanic coming with a compression test kit, but was hoping someone can give me some help please as to what im potentially looking at?

Its a TU1 engine, one of the easiest timing belts you could ever do.

The 8 valve petrol TU engines do sound tappety as the design dates from the mid 1980s

Check the timing, check the valve clearances - manual adjustment on these.

NOTE: Cylinder 1 is the GEARBOX end of the engine! Its a PSA Peugeot / Citroen quirk.

Head gasket is a TU weak spot BUT an easy / cheap repair for a mechanic.

The electronic fly by wire throttle body are a known weak spot.

Coolant temp sensor is a known TU engine weak spot.

Check the manicat hasn't collapsed.

Thanks for the info MrBSI. My usual mechanic turned up and the car has now gone into eco mode (showing on the dash) so wasnt able to get the engine running for him to listen it. Now got a local garage to come round after the Bank Holiday to run their code computer through it. Fingers crossed they can give me a diagnosis.

ECO MODE will vanish once the engine has started & ran.

Its just an automatic setting that cuts in & turns off electrical circuits to stop the battery going flat.
