Hunting Revs on 1.4 16v (KFU)

#1: Hunting Revs on 1.4 16v (KFU) Author: wezzo2001 PostPosted: Wed Jun 22, 2022 5:08 pm

In the last 6 months I've had a consistent issue with the revs hunting which has been bugging me ever since it has started. Recently I actually decided to look into it and have had an absolute nightmare trying to figure out what's wrong with it and taken it to several different garages to no avail.
I fitted a new throttle body and it only made the problem worse and caused the car to throw up an "Anti-Pollution" fault and stopped the car revving past 2000 revs and made the car undrivable. Yet when I restarted the car it went back to normal. Put the old throttle back on and that stopped the anti pollution fault.

I've had the coil pack replaced, along with the inlet manifold seals and a new coolant temperature sensor and fitted Bosch spark plugs and it runs a lot better and doesn't stall or rev hang as much anymore but the idle is still rev hunting and can't seem to find a fix for it. I did suggest to my mechanic it could be the injector seals have perished as there is a slight hissing in behind the intake manifold but he said that there were no signs of a leak and even tested for a leak and couldn't find any air escaping.

I know that the ECU's on these cars are a particular weakpoint and can throw up a multitude of issues including running problems but I'm just praying that that's not the issue Confused

Sidenote
My mechanic claimed that the car was running perfectly with no issues until he blipped the throttle and then the revs started hunting again. Also showed me if you disconnected the crankcase breather connected to the throttle body and stick your thumb in it the revs happily sit at the usual idle which is strange but I'm sure someone more intelligent can answer this Razz

Hissing at the intake sounds uh.. normal for a 1.4, though mines is a 8v!
I'm afraid I've not much for ideas there - if blocking the breather does that then is it maybe a PCV valve issue ? or air sensor issue? If blocking off the breather pipe is doing that'd hope its not the ECU - Hopefully there's an easy solution to be found!

I've taken it to a few different garages now and they have had different theories and one theory that seems to stick the most is the Body Control Module (BSI) that were installed on later 206's had a habit of dysfunction and causing a multitude of issues including running issues and EML lights with no obvious fault codes.

3 Different garages have had 3 different codes come up

1st one had a BSI no comm to ECU fault which supports the theory

2nd one had a fault with the stepper motor on the throttle body which when replacing the throttle made the issue worse and after reinstalling the old one seemed to have cleared the code which is unusual.

3rd one cleaned nearly every sensor on the engine and seemed to have fixed the jerkiness and lumpy running on the road but the idle seems to still be an issue.

4th and final theory is an issue with the clutch cable itself as it didn't get replaced with the clutch and there's a sensor in the clutch pedal that assists with idling and there is some slack in the cable which can be felt through the pedal itself and the clutch occasionally dropped straight to the floor and sticks. Not sure if the issue is related but I could be completely wrong.

Some people have said it could be a timing issue which could explain the strange whine coming from the top of the engine when at idle, but I had the cambelt changed nearly 2 years ago which it wouldn't make sense for the timing to magically go out in the last couple of months. And I don't fancy forking out the money for another cambelt kit fitted for £300+ if it doesn't fix the issue.

Also I'm not claiming to be a mechanic in the slightest and I'm just familiar with the issues that early 2000s peugeot's seem to have (A lot of them!)

FWIW years ago I had a late 2003 built 206 with the ET3JP4 engine, I had the software updated by a Peugeot dealer & it transformed how the engine performed as it had never been updated since it was built.

The fly by wire throttle body are known to suffer from dead spots, the fly be wire throttle pedal also suffers as well.

The VVT solenoid & also the VVT pulley can also be troublesome.

Also when the timing belt is replaced the correct locking tools MUST be used!

If you have access to Peugeot Planet that might help pin point / diagnose the issue.
