At 8am yesterday my engine was quite hot so I thought I would put my foot down to bring more cold air into the rad but that saw the temp shoot up and the stop light beeped at me (about 110 at this point). I stopped and let it cool down and it was fine after.
The top rad pipe was warm but it seemed to be dripping water from the expansion tank for some reason. (Still enough in it). The fan clattered and banged away as normal until the engine cooled down.
Is it likely the rad is blocked?
The engine should be okay?

|
if it was at 110 it would of melted any ice that was in the system anyway? first thing i would check is to see if your thermostat is working its easy to test

was thrashing it on the back roads on the way back from lancashire tonight and it seemed fine so will leave it for now.

Sounds like you had a partial freezing of your coolant due to a weak mix, get the antifreeze strength checked.

The dripping was probably the engine sweating, especially doing 110.

by taking it out and puting it in a bowl of boiling water out of a kettle you will see it open and when you take it out it will close slowly if it dont do that its faulty

I was worried about starting my 1.4 HDi in this cold weather so left it 'till thaw came as I read a frozen water pump can strip teeth off timing belt, I put a sample from expansion tank in freezer at -21C and still liquid so I used turkey baster to suck half a litre out of expassion tank and topped with neat antifreeze, I hope it mixes in when it gets hot, bit extra can't do no harm I hope, Used to do the boiling water on thermostat when I was young and repaired my own motor.

Its all very well dropping the stat into boiling water and watching it open but you really need to heat the water up slowly and measure the temperature of the water when the stat opens to make sure its opening at the correct temperature. This temperature, on average, is about 81-85 degrees.
