Over the last few months I've been getting a problem when I brake. Doesn't always happen so it's difficult to find out what the problem is. Seems to occur most when braking hard at fast speed eg coming off the motorway but lately it's also happened when pulling out of my garage at very slow speed. The problem is it feels like something is caught under the pedal and I can feel it moving up and down, and there's a scraping type noise with it. Even when braking at regular speed there's a very small amount of wobble which can be felt through the pedal and steering wheel. The problem is only for an instant and can't be replicated, even immediately after it happens.

Two separate garages have looked and found nothing. The first one just cleaned my brakes having found nothing, second one was part of my MOT and it passed with flying colours despite me telling them about the problem beforehand. Could it be a slightly warped disc? Any other suggestions? As I say it passed its MOT so it's nothing dangerous (supposedly) but makes me anxious all the same. Any ideas?

Thanks

Steve

You wouldn't feel a warped disc at really low speed.

Did they check the trigger rings on the front driveshafts? If they corrode they can break which leads to occasions where the ABS actually triggers for no apparent reason.

It could be "imprinted" disc. Very few discs warp but you can imprint them. Do some reading and research on the web reading about "imprinted" brake discs. If it is this you can often see a pad shaped mark on the disc. Alternatively if you jack it up and remove the wheel you can sometimes feel it by gently rubbing your fingers over the face of the disc.

If it is that there is a way to cure it but I won't post that in an open forum because it is a bit risky!

It feels more 'mechanical' than I would expect with ABS kicking in i.e. it feels like something is stuck on it or like a cable or something is caught under the pedal. When braking at slow speeds the pedal moves up and down with the speed of the wheel turning, which when I'm pulling out of the garage is literally a very slow up and down in line with the speed of the wheel turn. Does this still sound like it could be the ABS rings corroded and if so is it easy to see if the ABS rings are corroded?

Re: imprinted discs I've struggled to find too much info on the symptoms of this but from the few I have found it seems consistent with my issue. Perhaps I should just get new discs and be done with it!

I am not an expert on ABS faults so rely on others here to lead you.

If it was none ABS from your description I would be either fixing the existing discs (if they weren't to bad) or fitting new discs and pads. if you can DIY or have a mate who can DIY discs and pads are relatively cheap. Though please eliminate ABS or other failure before changing parts. If it is imprinted pads the feeling gets worse and pumping bake through the pedal the harder you brake.

If you search for warped barke disc you often also find lots of info on "imprinted" discs.
