Quite a few things to take off but 30 - 45 mins for a DIY and someone who has done it before maybe less if you want to see how quickly it can be done.

The b***h with the clutch cable id getting it on and off the pedal. It really is tricky and you must have long thin fingers. Short fat fingers won't do it. I have done it lots on my daughter's car and can get the cable on and off in seconds but the first time was over half an hour just to get it off the pedal.

By the way - long thin fingers not short thin as your penultimate post.

just before I do change the cable, any advice?

symptoms are struggles to go into 1st and reverse while parked. been advised that the clutch maybe on the way out and that changing the cable MIGHT make the clutch slip. any ideas or similar problems?

Cable change is probably not the fix. Also if you fit the cable to a car with worn clutch it will adjust itself to that wear and can't be reset so when you then fit a new clutch it is another new cable.

just a little update....

I decided to check the oil level in the gearbox today,

when I removed the filler plug there was no evidence of oil.

I had bought a 1 litre bottle of oil to top it up if needed.

it took the whole 1 litre and still no signs of it overflowing through the hole, so I nipped out and bought another litre.
it took another 1/2 litre until it started overflowing.

needless to say the gearbox works much better, still not 100% but a hell of a lot better.
