Hello, I have had a MOT failure on the brake load sensing valve being seized.

The valve is located on the drivers side just above the rear axle and has 4 hydraulic connections and is part of the braking system.

I manage to free the valve lever and the connected piston with some penetration fluid.

But is this a fail safe cure for any of the valve functions ?....is there some thing inside the valve that can be seen and what are the symptoms is any of this valve not working other than the lever freely moving.

One thing I have noticed is that when I put the brakes full on and I can still just about turn the rear wheels with some effort (with the valve lever moving freely).

The only clue I have is a ebay 331253017027 listing that says its a common MOT failure and that the valve cause low pressure.

I would be grateful for any relevant information .

There are 2 different compensator valve's used on the 206 so make sure you get the correct one for your car!

Also there only £106 including VAT from any Peugeot main dealer.

If the one currently fitted to your car is made by BOSCH, look for the 10 digit Bosch ID number that will be on the part somewhere & look something like X XXX XXX XXX.

If you can get that Bosch 10 digit ID number then a motor factor / Bosch automotive dealer maybe a cheaper option for a genuine Bosch part.

Much to echo MRBSI check out eurocarparts and mister auto they have bosch and bendix types depending on which you need price ranges from £54 - £84.

Thanks for the two replies.
I took the car back for the MOT retest this afternoon and it passed on the original brake regulator after I freed it with penetration fluid and some levering with a screwdriver .
One thing I did notice if that the MOT man whilst under the car in the inspection pit is that he pushed and pulled the the car up and down on the suspension and watched the valve.


Hope this is of use.

Checking the valve is free to move & function correctly Wink

Basically: That valve is linked to the rear suspension so it will allow more braking force to the rear wheel's if the rear of the car is loaded down with people / luggage.

This is now on my to-do list ... MOT fail today but not really surprised as the 206 hasn't been used since April 2018 (cylinder head core plug leak) and has been sitting in a dampish car port all that time!

Hoping copious quantities of pentrating fluid and a whiggle will do the trick. It definitely doesn't look pretty under there so hoping it won't need replacing .. I can see a lot of fun getting those brake pipes off in one piece!


That and a main beam blew when on the test ramp!

I can see the purchase of a brake pipe flare spanner, maybe also a brake pipe flare kit & some suitable Kunifer pipe.

No just copious quantities of penetrating fluid. Sprayed it Friday evening, then again yesterday morning when I also tried to lever it very gently .. after 5-10 mins saw a minute movement. More fluid ... cup of tea ... more gentle leverage. Slightly larger miniscule movement. More fluid. Left it until today when I got under the back and using various screwdrivers very gently got it moving ... to the point it is visibly pulling the operating rod/spring assembly. Dried off most of the fluid and then sprayed with lithium grease. Done! Smile

The headlight was less successful turning out to be a broken wire and then o/s side light popped. My hands will heal over time I'm sure ... Wink

I'd still like to meet the man who designed to 206 ... preferably in a dark alley! *Censored*

Strange, mine failed MOT with the same thing last week, that and worn ball joint drivers side, mine actually freed up quite easily a few sprays with wd40, and a soft headed hammer , then I used spray grease to ensure it stays free, seems to be a common ailment on the 206,

My 206 had been standing for 18 months so I wasn't surprised .. I was just worried how rusted up .. if the pin had become one with the valve body I think I was going to be in replacement territory. And looking at the brake pipe fittings .. it could have been an expensive few weeks ahead.

You were lucky using WD40 .. that is pretty naff as a penetration fluid .. unless it was the WD40 penetrating fluid. I have a couple of cans of stuff from the 80s which are still going, and eats into corrosion. Getting low in both now though Sad (Was used in aircraft industry!)

I've still got a 3rd of a can of this excellent stuff for freeing off stuck metal parts - cant get it any more due to health & safety / the environment.

gave mine another going over, how hard is it to remove the unit, I have until Saturday before the car goes in for re test, and I'm thinking possibly removing mine to make sure the valve is working freeing everything up before Saturday its working, the arm is, but I'm unsure if the valve is operating freely. short of getting a helper to step on the brakes at the moment the boot has some heavy equipment sitting there to try to see if it can activate the valve. when I pull on the lever.

I started the process of trying to remove mine off my old 1.6 a few years back as part of an axle swap. Don't recall why I was trying to do that, because it couldn't have been needed.

Anyway I had to give up because it was a ball-ache trying to undo the nuts. IIRC it was an odd size too (11mm?) so had to go buy a tool for the job! I ended up rounding them off too much to make it worth whatever effort I was trying to put in to it.

TL;DR

Expect it not be straight forward! Wink

There are four brake pipes and associated fittings all of which are probably seized and you run the risk of twisting the pipe trying to remove those.

The valve appears to be held by a single hex headed bolt so I'm pretty sure that would round off at the first attempt.

Hence soak, soak and soak again them gently work the arm.
