When replacing clutch set on any cable (non-hydraulic) setup always replace the auto-adjusting cable as well.
It is non-resetable and makes a phenominal difference to the feel of the pedal and correct biting point etc.
If not replaced, there is a high risk of juddering (bunny hopping) later-on, which can even seem like the engine is missing and other less obvious effects.
Also make sure you follow the correct procedure when fitting the replacement, so that it doesn't use-up more clicks than needed.
I have found this from bitter experience and expence and most people just don't bother.

Good bit of info, but I would state that this is only truly apparent on when the clutch fails from being worn out.
Also when doing a clutch replace the release shaft where the bearing sits

I always thought this but since we're talking mm worth of difference on the disk, I now strongly believe that even and as soon as you take it off, somehow it doesn't work the same as a brand-new one.
BTW: They're very cheap genuine from dealers' at the moment, I don't know why..
Maybe it's only the LHD ones.

Yeah, good to learn. My mechanic told me that, change both at once for better perf. Seems you are confirming that. Might have to replace mine soon as its a pita to press the clutch.

If you mean it's very stiff that would be the comb springs have gone hard from metal fatigue and it won't make a difference I don't think.

just to confirm, gti's are hydraulic clutches aren't they?
i've just changed my clutch recently and when i press the pedals it makes a clicking noise. i've sprayed some silicon grease above the pedal which seems to work but comes back after a week or two..

Mines getting heavy as well, ill get round to doing it later in the year.
Will be new LUK clutch kit, support shaft & cable.
Might as well do the gearbox oil & driveshaft seals at same time
Im pretty happy the factory fitted clutch is still working at 94k+ miles.

Hm interesting. So no need to change the clutch then? Might have saved me some money here. One strange thing is that its noisy when cold, after a couple of minutes, the noise goes out. Does it sometimes too when on idle, when I press it partly, the noise goes out.

Yes you do have to change the whole clutch to make it soft again.
Simply changing the cable will not likely do it.
The noise is normal with the exact behaviour you describe within reason.
I had it to a severe problem extent: www.206info.co.uk/Foru...44687.html
I strongly recommend you leave it and hope it becomes better when you change clutch set + release bearing etc.

Does the 136 have a hydraulic or cable system though?

Definitely agree. My clutch cable is wearing out and needs to be replaced yet the clutch is fine at 75000 miles. I had a heart attack the first time I realised there was something wrong with the clutch cable. The clutch pedal went right to the floor and I couldn't put the car into any gear.
