Basically i need a usb power supply to my tablet to be active only when the car ignition is started, not overnight. i don't mind if its from one click turn or when the engine is running only, as long as the power is off while I'm not using the car. How hard would this be?

CAUTION: If you wire direct from the battery (like I have) you should consider using something that employs a delayed start, and offers surge protection otherwise you risk frying your table during crank.

Guys, cant i just go under cigarette lighter in the middle and splice off a wire from + and from - and go straight to a mini usb? ...

Is the car pre or MUX?

You can do but the cig lighter is 12v DC. You need 5V 1A/2.1A. You can do this if you're any good at soldering with a basic voltage regulator. If you put 12v into the tablet you WILL fry it immediately.

Option B is buy a mini USB cig lighter charger and smash up the plug end of it. Circuitry in there will do exactly the same job. You'll just have to frankenstein it together. That's the safest option if you're not confident in component wiring. It is also the messiest looking solution IMO.

You can tap into the wire[s] going to the cig.lighter (the negative can be grounded essentially anywhere...) IIRC there are 3 wires: +12 for heating the lighter and this the one you want to connect to, +12 for the illumination, and ground.

. I've wired in a little distribution block to which I've then connected footwell LED's as well as the guts of a USB supply for a dash cam (removed from the clunky cig. adapter plug and stuffed into a plastic electronics project box.

Thanks, I wired my footwell neons from the interior light bulb holder and was hoping that this usb would be just as easy.

is there a tutorial around for dismantling a cig lighter charger and splicing it in? (which wires are which etc)

The wire that connects to the bottom centre pin is +12, the one/two pieces of springy metal on the side is ground.
