Hey guys!

I've owned my peugeot 206 for about a year now, it's a 51 plate 1.1 petrol with 103k on the clock, since I got it it's ran great but the other day it started juddering when slowing down and jumping when pulling off (I put it down to clutch control, but not sure whether it's relevant to my problem so thought it was worth a mention).

Tonight while driving home I attempted to do a junction (from almost stationary) in first and couldn't get going (no power trying to pull off and juddering like hell), then as I went into second my power just dropped, had to pull over as it decided the judder to a stop with my foot on the floor. Whilst this happened my engine light started flashing.

Tried starting him up after a few minutes and it started first time with the engine light on. Took a steady drive home after seeing if I could get power again, got to 30 in 4th at 3k revs and still no pull so dropped down and took it easy. Then when I got home it decided to crawl down the street at 5mph with my foot on the floor on 2nd (revs didn't climb with foot on the floor, which is why I kept it there as was worried the power would go if I lifted off) - by the time I got home the thermostat on my dash was reading around 80c - worth pointing out as it was only a 5-10 minute drive (coolant was full last time I checked - a week or so ago)

Any ideas what the problem is with it? Pricy garage trip incoming?

(Ps, not great with car parts so maybe dumb it down a little for me? ;))

It sounds like the car has gone into limp mode, which protects the engine when the car detects there is a fault.

A temperature reading of 80 would be average, but if it's gone into the red and flashed 'STOP' at you, then that would be an indication of a cooling problem. (Why not check if you have any coolant, to be on the safe side?)

You need to get the codes read which will given an indication into what the problem is.

Thanks for responding! I've had the car to a garage recently as the check engine light came on a little while ago but the mechanic said he did a reset on the fault codes and said that since the fault didn't come back it was nothing to worry about.. the fault that time was something about one of my fuel injectors not functioning on the engine or something? Could that have developed into this problem perhaps?

Also is it safe for me to drive it in limp mode? The nearest garage is about 4 miles..

A few things to check:

Has it got a Sagem coil pack fitted? I would be shocked if it still has.

Has it got NGK spark plugs fitted? If it has throw them away & fit Bosch ones.

Check under the bonnet & look at the windscreen washer jets - water leaks drop on to the injector electrical connector plugs causing electrical problems with the injector.

A fuel injector can be shut down by the engine ecu if it detects a misfire on that cylinders spark plug - the ecu does that to protect the catalytic convertor.
