Read through a few threads on this, but can’t find anything which is exactly the same as my daughter’s… her 206 said it was overheating a couple of years ago, got a new sensor fitted, all fine since.
Yesterday it said it was overheating again, and this time she had to top it up with quite a lot of water. Went OK for over an hour – then started off again today, got about another hour down the M4, and it happened again.
Sadly I’m not with her, and she doesn't understand cars, but over the phone, I got her to take the cap off the header tank, whereupon the level started to drop, to the point where she now needs to top it up again.
So I’m trying to work out the likely cause till she can get it home and to a garage… no obvious water on the ground; no mayo on the oil cap.
Thoughts, anyone?

I had this problem a few years back. I never found out the exact cause.

Trouble is, I’m relying on 2nd-hand accounts by a teenage girl… what happened, apparently, is the needle went up gradually; when it hits the red, the coolant overheating message comes up on the console.
First time, she foolishly pulled the cap off the header, and water naturally gushed out, so that MAY have been the cause of it seeming low in the header… 2nd time, she says she took the cap off very gradually as I explained to her, and the water slowly went down as she watched… but maybe that’s normal? So long since I worked on a car, I can’t remember how anything works 
Then she filled it up a bit more again, and drove nearly all the way from London to Gloucestershire without incident.
I mean, this happened a couple of years ago, and the garage just replaced the temp sensor, and it’s been OK ever since, but it doesn't get a lot of use as she’s away at Uni most of the time, and the car’s just sitting here.
Worth replacing the sensor again do you think? Is it easy to get at/cheap to buy?

I had a problem with the wife's car going through water !!
It worked out to be the thin black hose from the expansion bottle to the radiator, it had a small crack in it on the bend.
Since I repaired it, no more constant filling up !!!
Might be worth checking that ??

Sounds like it now has air in it.
Might be worth replacing the thermostat & also the coolant.
Thermostat should open at 89 deg C on the petrol 206.
If you have Peugeot Planet - go in to actuator test & make sure both the low & high speed cooling fan speeds are working.

On my 1.4 8v there are two points to bleed air from the cooling system. one on a pipe that goes into the bulk head that looks like a tyre valve... and another on the thermostat housing a hex bolt which is a bit tricky to see and get at. both work well.

Also, have you checked the passenger footwell for dampness? There's a coolant pipe (in two parts) that runs behind the glovebox, and it's common for the seal between the two parts of this pipe to wear down and for coolant to end up in the cabin.
This and the fan relays (the issue to which MrBSI refers) are probably the two biggest failure points of the cooling system on the 206 that I've seen.
You mentioned Gloucestershire earlier, is that local for her/you?

Thanks both – I live in Gloucestershire, and she’s home here from Uni most of the time at the moment, yes. But although I used to, I’m not really competent to “do things” to cars any more… shaky fingers, eyes not great close up etc. So I can’t really take things apart.
Haven't got the PP diag you mention – just a generic OBD2 thingy. I’ll certainly get her to check the carpets.
Would a competent garage (mine is) know about the relays which fail?
What’s the diag for hgf? Some kind of pressure test I guess?

Just a quickie guys - I still haven't been to the car myself, but it seems to be losing about a litre of coolant a day, doing a 14-mile round trip commute. Carpets are dry.
That being the case, can we discount electronic problems etc?
One thing - she reports today that the cap on the header tank "won't tighten" - sounds like it's stripped. Might a sizeable volume of water boil out of it if it wasn't maintaining pressure for that reason?
