First thing I would check are the bottom ball joint/wishbone assembly, this is a common area for problems on f/wheel drive vehicles and will cause the car to veer about in the way you have mentioned. ...

Rather annoyingly and going against what the previous owner lead me to believe......This turned out to be a badly fitted cambelt....a tooth out!
