I have a thunk/knock on the steering when turning the wheel 180 degrees either way, the car is on 75K and the garage did mention previously that there was a little play in the steering.

It's not a knocking it is definitely a metallic rattle. Like shaking the washer on and nut.
Wiggling that ring makes the exact same sound, The question is what is allowing the ring to move?? |

The play is up and down, as shown in this image.
Worth replacing? I assume it's the rubber seal that needs replacing not the heat shield ring as it look as thin ... |

This ring is rattling over bumps, the other side is tight but this one spins and has movement to rattle.
What is it? Any idea on the problem? Its just a passed it's MOT.
