Well if it smells of unburnt fuel i'd be inclined to say at least one of your spark plugs isn't firing so its running on at most 3 cylinders. Which would explain the lack of power/rumbling etc. Either ...

I had a similar experience with a 1.1 TU engine, turned out to be coilpack. Does it smell of unburnt fuel at the exhaust?

Independent garages will do your diagnostic for about 45 quid and more than likely come up with the same results. My 2003 2.0HDi went to an independent this week, fully sorted now.

The speedlines are lighter than the SMRs, fractionally. So depending on what you swapped you might have saved a few grams!
