I have just checked it this way, there is still slight play in the 3 and 9 o'clock positions, but no play in 6 and 12 o'clock positions.

Also, the power steering feels heavier than it should be. Fluid is fine and isn't leaking, and both wishbones and track rod ends are new.

Yes, got someone to hold the steering wheel, pushing it against the lock so it was still.

Most places will do a free battery/alternator check. Most likely isnt the starter motor because it wouldn't turn over at all if that had gone/jammed.
