haynes gives 4 possibilities for engine running on:

- excessive carbon build-up in engine
- high engine operating temp
- engine management system fault - petrol models
- fuel injection pump faul ...

thanks guys for such quick and definite diagnosis - yes charging circuit is definitely a more immediate problem - will try and get it sorted in the morning

as above - failed suddenly and completely on a roundabout on way home from work and scared the s**t out of me - thought I had lost all steering for a sec

and the battery warning light has come on

no - don't think so - fairly constant pitch and then stops abruptly as I pull away

my car has recently developed this problem - the noise goes away when I straighten up and speed up. sounds like maybe slipping belt

power steering problem? fluid? pump? belt?

Haynes manual identifies the screw locations - when I took mine out I removed glove-box, centre console and the panel at the end of the dashboard first for better access and to get some extra light in ...

if there is a knack to it then I don't have it - I have removed the panel completely and am working from the back - I've pushed, p ...
