Are LEDs polarity sensitive? If they are backwards, no good?

I have a 2001 GTI 206 coupe, 2 litre.

The backlights on my heater/ac unit and dash clock/temp guage wont work. I have replaced the LEDs, but no win.

All fuses are fine, and heaters working fine ...
