the fixtures around my mfd rattles. try applying some pressure around there when you hear it and see if it disappears or softens. Just so you can narrow it down.

If the whine dissapears when you press the clutch then that could be an indication of input shaft bearings going.

I doubt it would be fixed by a gearbox oil change but could try. I changed my gearb ...
