OK, sorted, removed the sensor plug (close to the oil filter), cleaned the contacts, locked it in again, and its reading the right temperature. (and oil level - I think it'a a "2-in-1" sensor).

My guess is that it's a normal, cast steel flywheel which has been on a diet (to a point) and that the material used is nothing special.

Good point!..

Indeed a flywheel doesn't just 'warp' but the ones in our GTi 180s are not really designed to last more than our OEM clutches and -for example- parking every day on a highly sloped ro ...

pug1off versions supposed to be machined from solid chunk of steel (billet) and not cast metal... The question (for me) is how hard is it for this flywheel to get 'warped' and start causing vibrations ...
