sounds more like rusting to me, head gasket is more of a white/cream froth/foam
and is it losing any oil/coolant? |

the front to rear brake pipes run "over" the4 fuel tank, so to fit new pipes the tank has to come off.
i will check the fuse when it gets light |

it could be the squib behind the stearing wheel, if you can find the yellow cased wires with yellow plugs they are the ones to check both under the seat and behind the wheel.
