I have to completely stop to select 1st. And I mean completely.
No, matching the revs makes no difference either. I've read from others the same.

However browsing the Hayne's the other day, it says "synchromesh in all forward gears" to my utter disgust.
What's happening?

Is this really a problem? As I wouldn't & can't see why anyone with any mechanical sympathy would select first unless stationary anyway!

I occasionally select first when rolling to a stop at, for instance, a set of lights I know will be changing to green very soon, but know I'll be stopping before they change.

I can definitely change to first without stopping, with no problems, don't do it often though, and never release the clutch unless I've fully stopped, otherwise I'd be changing back up a gear first.

I do, when sometimes your are too slow for second but not stopped completely. If it were a problem, just remember to go in second would be annoying but doubt it would be a massive problem.

Are you saying I'm a cr@p driver?!

i too have this problem. many a times i will be in a situation where my car is too slow for gear 2 and trying to accelerate on gear 2 just drags the engine. going to 1 is impossible unless i come to a complete stop. i think its a problem with our gear box? i think if my speed is like less than 30km/h, gear 2 is not appropriate and i would be dragging it. Confused

I still say I wouldn't want to be ramming my car into 1st gear while still moving, let alone at nearly 30kmh! I'd rather plan ahead & be in the right gear, or if I was desperate to accelerate faster, I'd slip the clutch momenteretly till my speed increased.

So you're following a lorry or slow moving vehicle up a really steep hill and second gear is making the engine labour, most people would select first on the move rather than stop and be called a @*$ by those following.

V9977 only asked a reasonable question Surprised

Yes, I bet the 180 picks up quite nicely, but why don't you come have a go in my 1.4i and then tell us all how to drive.

You shouldn't be able to get the car into first when rolling at anything much more than 1mph. It's completely normal.

Mine will go into first up to about 5-8mph but anything higher and there is no chance :/
