Basically my door membrane has seen better days and they're nearly £30 each from a dealer, and ones in scrap yards are an a**e to remove! Can you use plastic sheeting to do the job? As long as it's sealed round the edges?

If its going to be a water tight finish then there is no reason you cant as it is doing the same job as the membrane

Stops water getting into the car through the door.

The cardboard might not work as if it gets wet enough then the water might soak through still - i no it would take alot of wate but it might be possible

Plastic Sheeting and some sort of sealant should be fine imo.

Sound proofing and stops the draft thru the holes in the doors. The water should run down the inside of the door and thru the holes in the bottom.

We made some for a Golf I had once, which leaked like a basket the first time I put a hose on it! Local VW renovation guy made his own like this all the time. You can get clear fairly thick plastic sheeting from garden centres and DIY stores, cut from a roll.

Get some spray on adhesive, the type used by carpet fitters. Cut the sheet roughly to size, spray the adhesive on the surround of the door, fit the sheet (a 2 person job as you need to keep it fairly tight), and trim off any extra for a tidy edge.

I would of thought mastic of sum sort would have been beter as it will make a water tight finish

We tried mastic first - doesn't hold the plastic sheet well. Hence spoke to the chap up the road that restores VWs for a living and he said the adhesive works better. Is meant to stick down carpet and vinyl, so its pretty waterproof. Make sure you get the carpet stuff though, as some glues are water soluble.

Is a plastic sheet going to be good enough?

Isn't part of the job of this membrane to deal with the inside as well as the outside, i.e. to prevent condensation build-up?

Found a slightly thicker bin bag so going to use that Smile

Anyone ever used any of these glues and which one is best to stick the lining to the door? Cheers Very Happy
