Ok well after messing about so much and flushing the rad lots and lots we have discovered that the pver heating of my engine could be the fact that teh thermostat is broke.. and parts that have broken off may have gone into the engine and blocking the water getting through...

Soo can someone tell me what this is.... Ive circled it and is it easy to get off?

I imagine it has a thermostat housing that can be removed just like on the GTi.

I presume youve replaced the 'broken' thermostat & run the engine? & I've never heard of one failing so catastrophically that it breaks up & jams the water ways causing overheating. Post a picture up of the broken one, but I think your problem is else where.

A broken thermostat would actually improve cooling possibly. If it was always open, you'd have no problems. If it was stuck closed, then youd notice hotter temps.

IS there a block on the side of the engine similar to the one below?

Water pump is driven by the timing belt.

That's on the opposite end of the engine Wink

My dad thinks someoen may have put radweld into the system to try and fix a leak with teh heater matrix and when it blocked up and was pver heating they cut the thermostat so it didnt overheat.

Looks very rusty, your Radiator is probably in the same condition! Did you find the spring and the rest of the thermostat?
