Does your car have an oil cooler. As if this starts to leak you would get oil in the water without the signs of a head gasket failure. More common on diesels for this fault but possibly worth looking into

if its only a 1.4 doubt it will have an oil cooler, i think the 5 year thing means to completely get all the oil out of the water system as it would be hard to flush it all out in one go

may sound odd (not sure if any help or not..), but when checking the anti-freeze level a month or two ago mine had an oily black/brown looking sludge in the water/coolant bottle, and was caked right around the inside of the bottle, like wet mud. We checked the oil and there was no scummy/milky bits in/around it, and the car was running fine.
We drained the coolant and flushed it right out, then cleaned the inside of the bottle - was told after that sometimes mixing different colour coolants can make the bottle/fluid go muddy/mank inside.

can do a compression test.
but surely won't cost that much for the head gasket job to be done properly. |
It is a big cost.. Because the heads may need skimming...
