Went on holiday and left the car standing on the drive for a week. Tried starting it when I got back and would'not start!!!
Called the RAC out and they charged the battery and told me to run the car for 45mins which I did to fully charge the battery and they tested the battery to show a result of good, which I'd expect for a new battery.
Battery is only one month old as I was having starting issues with the old battery when leaving it for long periods of time. This is the first time this battery's let me down as it has been powering up fine before this!
Have done some searching to understand that my headunit could be the main culprit to draining the battery as I can turn it on without the key in, meaning there is probably a permanent live to it.
But I have removed the fascia and ipod connection from my headunit and it's still struggling to start on the first turn of the key, it normally take two turns for the engine to turn over now and the engine makes a small squeak noise that I've noticed when the engine turned off.
Has anyone got any ideas what could be wrong??
Thanks in advance

Is there any test I can do to see if it is the alternator?
Also does anyone know how much labour is involved with replacing the alternator, e.g. bumper of job?

Multimeter on the battery with the engine running, should be 13.8-14.8 volts

Alternator cost my Mum around £200 inc labour, but varies from car to car.

Will test my alternator later when I get hold of the multimeter, sounds like it could be the problem
What condition is the alternator in and will it fit my 2005 GTi 180 with no problems?
Thanks

When I looked up the Valeo part number it said it fit the GTi 180/RC
It works fine, charged the battery up fine on the GTi I removed it from.

Tested the voltage a bit earlier and it was reading 14.2v which seems to be ok but turned the car off for about 10mins and restarted it a it took a while to turnover again
Could it still be down to the alternator even though the multimeter gave a good reading?

Alternator sounds fine.
Have you tried, turning it to ignition, waiting about 4 seconds, then starting?
