I understand the airbag ECU is located under the carpet under the ashtray, but when I remove the ashtray, I can't for the life of me find a way to lift the carpet - I'd rather not remove all the plastics surrounding the hanbrake/gearstick just to access it - am I missing something here?

No.. You have to remove the whole centre section. Handbrake surround etc.
