I have a 1.9 diesel, year 2000. It makes a VERY weird noise when travelling between 60-80mph.

It sounds like wind but i open all the windows it still does it. When i turn slightly it sometimes does it, when I turn hard it does it sometimes, when i dip clutch it still does it, when i lift off accellerator it still does it.
Combining the lot, sometimes it does it sometimes it doesnt. Head Unit turned of it still does it. Day and night it does it.

I always say, 99/100 there is always a cause and a problem is never random. But this just seems to do it randomly.

As i travel a lot on motorways etc. need to get it fixed, but dont want the garage to change 100 parts and then realise what the problem is, and pay a fortune!

Any help would be much appreciated.

206 FTW!!!

Could it be a wheel bearing, maybe only squeeling as a certain speed?

Im not sure how you could conclude it as being the power steering pump from that information lol?

Please Dont take any of my posts as written fact. They are simply my opinion and although to the best of my knowledge true, the information within them may well be incorrect.

I did think that, it is a very werid noise though. I also thought one of the pulleys was squeeking so i wd40'd all them like fek. But still does it. I doubt its power steering pump.

Im not sure if putting Wd40 on the pullys is a good idea tbh, at best it will only be a quick fix, the squeel will come back in a few days.

Does it make the sound when you rev the engine up to say 3k and hold it there (as if you were doing 60-80mph) but stationary.

That would rule out the actual engine if it doesnt.

Also try folding your mirrors in and seeing if the noise goes away. There is a particular model of Toyota Yaris where the wind passing over the wing mirror makes this strange whining/whistle noise. Its not very likely on a 206 but you never know lol

It was only to rule out that possibility, it doesnt do it in a particular gear, just the speed. And no it doesnt do it when you rev to 3k. Mirrors i very much doubt it, but its worth a try i suppose. I rekon ill just put it in for wheel bearing, as thats covered under warrenty anyway.

could be anything really mate! lol

Id try to locate the noise and pinpoint the area its coming from. Id say its either a belt, cv joint or bearing but cant be certain without it being located and pinpointed to an area really.

Definately not a belt, makes the wrong sort of noise. not cv joint as i doesnt do it around corners, im heading more towards bearing. Or maybe just some sort of air pocket somewhere!
