As above, you know your engine better than jim bob gypo on ebay's engine
I think it looks better on the records to keep an original engine that runs in sync with the car's mileage. I change my oil every 5k miles in the hopes it will prolong the engine life, maybe you could try that too

Few questions
1. If you know the previous owner why not ask them if its been looked after
*thats me, yes it has, that engine is a beaut for a 1.1, 1st point of call, service it*
2. If you felt 80k was a large amount of miles, why did you buy the car?
*and you can't even say for the looks as half the things you want to change*
3. Why change for a 1.1 engine if your going to change the engine, i'd go GTi and i nearly did

The cost for the engine and labour will probably total the cost of your car. I'm coming up to 100k now and no sign of engine defects

A well maintained 81k will be better than a mistreated 40k one...
