Hi
Engine light came on the other week and the code iv got from it is P0711 Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance
But not sure what could cause that, is there anything i can check/easily do to sort it or do you think im going to have to take it to the garage?

An ELM327 usb with proscan 5.9, was just some cheap thing i got from ebay

Try using scantool with the ELMs, i've found it performs much better and covers just about every car ive thrown it at against other programs 'provided'

I use the Palmer Performance Engineering software with the ELM lead. Never had any problems.
Did you get a disc with proscan on or was it one of the download links that ebay seller like to send out?
It is possible that the software is set up for one of the other protocols. Try checking your settings to make sure it is set to ISO and not PWM, CAN or VPW
