Just noticed the other day that my car looked to be idling at 2000revs, thought it was just the cold weather and the idle control trying to warm the engine etc.
But then noticed today that it wasnt actually idling high, it was just the needle that was reading wrong, as when I turned the engine off, the needle sat at 500.
Turned the ignition off and on a few times and noticed the entire cluster needles were "clicking" a bit and then dropping to zero.
After the few restarts, the problem stopped, and everything was reading ok.
The engine itself runs fine, but could this be something thats gonna bite me in the ass in the run up to xmas?

What condition is the battery in? Ive seen on a few of our cars at work where when the batteries been on the way out the dials go mad and flicker up and down all the time. Might be something to check to rule it out.

Sounds like the battery is on its way out unless its the cluster but I don't think so.

Will be a cluster fault, either the needle is coming loose of the metal shaft OR the gear for the rev counter drive will be sticky or about to throw in the towel.
If its the drive unit you could take the cluster apart & lube it OR I have seen rebuild kits for about £40 on the web for these.
On the older 206 clusters the speedo & rev counter always seem to pack up sooner or later.

Its not just the rev counter one that flickered though, the speedo did, and since I started this thread it hasnt done it and Ive driven to Leeds and back today.
I do know with pug's though that warning signs appear and then suddenly your kicked in the balls with things, rev counter on my previous 1.9D never worked!
