Hi all,

My wifes 1.4 petrol blew its head gasket for the umpteenth time the other night so I've sacked that car off and bought a near identical 1999 1.9D non-turbo 206 to replace it.

It has many faults (cost £750 with 12months mot). One of which is the rev counter not working.

The whole binnacle was mal-fitted, suggesting to me that some urchin has been a messing. The rev counter is the petrol one too (going to 7k). Is it possible that they unit has been swapped over to "clock" the car?

The rev counter sits at 0, all the time. The engine runs as finely as a diesel can.

The aircon doesn't work either - a very random statement to add but my google searching reaveled other owners believing that the issues were linked. I remain to be convinced by this though.

Where is the glow plug light? One doesn't come on.

Any help gratefully recieved.

Ive yet to see a 1.9 diesel 206 come with a rev counter fitted.

It sounds like someone has replaced the instrument cluster.

My old T reg 1.9D had a rev counter?
It didnt work and I was told it wasn't worth getting fixed.

Most of the ebay cars for sale have rev counters on them in the pictures. I was just wondering if it has had the petrol clocks fitted if the rev counter would actually work? Would buying a diesel (5000rpm) tacho unit fix the issue or do I need to trace the source?

Mines the same and also doesnt work. The trip also jumps to 900 miles everytime i reset it. Cant wait to pay off my loan and get rid of the heap of SH*T Laughing

I've replaced the crank position sensor/ TDC sensor with a new one. Still no rev counter action. The aircon doesn't work either. Looking at the Haynes manual it would appear the the crank sensor signal goes into a aircon unit before being passed by out to the dashboard. Is it possible that this aircon unit (forgotten the name) is knackered? The wiring is shot? Or the trigger on the flywheel isn't actually there?

My dashboard is the correct one, all the bulbs had been pulled out from behind.... the tacho just goes up to 7000, which is enthusiastic.

Easy enough for a diesel to do if it starts running away on its own oil Wink

If you ever have a diesel run away you have 4 options to save it:

1 - Stick it in 5th gear with handbrake & footbrake fully on & stall it.
2 - Block the air intake.
3 - CO2 fire extinguisher squirted up the air intake.
4 - RUN away as fast as possible.

Sorry, must have been unclear. The tacho is graded up to 7000rpm - my problem is that the needle doesn't move. I don't think I've ever managed to get the engine above 4000rpm Smile


The crank sensor is producing 500mV, AC measured on my multimeter, at idle - rising to 1V when the revs are raised. I've traced the wires to the air con cut off unit (as it is called in the Haynes manual) which is a small IC mounted on a steel plate where later models had ECU's fitted instead. The lines are conituous and the 500mV is present at the input to the "Bitron". Pins 10 and 11 of the Bitron are conitinuous to the dashboard, pins 16 and 17. So this looks the same as Haynes would suggest.

So, my gauge doesn't work? The "Bitron" has failed? Or 500mV at idle is too small a signal?
What signal would be expected at the dashboard/gauge? Does the Bitron convert the AC waveform or amplify it in any way?

The needle on the rev counter dips down below zero at key on (the same as my petrol model did). Which suggests to me that the gauge is working.... ?

OK, traced the line to the OBD port, pin 3 is the same as pin 11 of the "aircon cut-off unit". The connection is good between the two but there is no ac or dc voltage present. What signal is expected on pin 3 of the OBD port at idle?

Bought a new aircon cut-off unit. Still no worky. Looking more closely at the Haynes suggests to me that their wiring diagram isn't quite matching what my car has. The wiring diagram shows that the air con cut off unit has two pin 3's! further the colour of the wires they say are going into the unit are not matching mine, now are the voltages or signals.

Looking at the non aircon wiring diagram it would appear that the cps is wired directly into the dashboard. So I'm considering putting a wire jumper across the multi way connector to feed the cps signal directly into the dash and completely do away with the aircon cut off unit. The only issue with this is that the aircon cut off unit provides one line to the aircon ecu. I would love to able to get the aircon to work, should this line be held high, low, left floating or need a waveform? Does anybody know?

In the meanwhile I am going to break open the old aircon cutoff unit to see if I can reverse engineer what signals go where.
