This time last year i went to a old guy just down the road from me, for cash he pressure tested the head and skimmed it for £50.
Gives you a vague idea of how much, but i also got quoted £100 for a pressure test and skim. So as always try a few places for prices.

most places charge £25-£30 for a head skimm. ( where i go its £25 )
if you have drove the car for a long period of time while it's overheating then yes it would need to be skimmed but if you have not let it over heat for long then it would not need to be skimmed.

try having the head tightened before you go any further.

Id agree with Mr BSI, I had my head skimmed a couple of years ago, cost me £45 inc VAT at a local engineering company. If you're gonna take the head off get it skimmed regardless if the engine has overheated or not, nothing worse than putting it all back together and it leaks again.
Just as an after thought, why do you suspect the head gasket- what symptoms are you having/got?
