Hi everyone, new to the site and starting off with a question I'm afraid. Had a quick look through previous posts and can't find anything directly on the point.

I have a 206 GTi and yesterday what I believe to be the heat shield on the cat has fallen off, I think the cat has been on the car for approx 30,000 miles so showing signs of wear. I'll be taking it to a local non pug garage either way later in the week but would really value some feedback from the forum

I guess I have two questions:

1. Is this something to be concerned about? Obviously it wouldn't be on the car if it wasn't needed(!) but is it essential?
2. Does anyone else have any experience of this happening and did it result in a quick fix (i.e. welded back on or replacement heat shield) or did the whole cat get replaced. I would rather not replace the cat as it seems to otherwise be working fine and recently sailed through MOT...

Thanks in advance.

Nathan
