Had an interesting day in College yesterday. Halfway through a lesson, a police lady came to pull me out of the lesson! I'd been told someone had knocked my mirror off and was nothing to worry about. Standard stuff.

When i get down to the front of my school, there's two Police cars and a huge great Artic lorry blocking the road! The lorry had tried squeezing through a gap and had clipped the side of my car.

Luckily, only minor damage. The Passenger side wheel arch is scratched and scraped, and the wing mirror is now in smitherines, but nothing more so it seems!

One of the police officers who attended suggested that i contact the company and request that they quite literally 'send me a cheque' for the repairs, rather than going through insurance companies.

Simple stuff, it seems. However, the company in question are Polish based. What would other people advise on here? Should i go through Admiral, and risk my premium for next year, or should i write to the company.

I've had two quotes for the mirror and body repairs. I simply can't believe how expensive it is! I'd openly admit that if i were an employee at this company, i'd happily keep the cheque book in my drawer! I had one quote for £700 and another for around £470?

Thanks for taking the time to help me out! I might be able to post a picture or two later.

Write them a letter or email them with copies of the bills. See what their response is and go from there.

When you say arch do you mean the front of back? If its for the front both are a bit expensive.

Have you got pictures of the lorry with your car to show what happened? If the answer is yes I would write them a letter with the pictures and see what they say.

You never know they may just pay out for the repairs.

You might struggle then as it will be your word against their drivers, but you have nothing to loose trying.

Good luck

make sure u have all the details of the lorry cab and seperate reg for the load if there was one. police logs dont always have them in though. used to work with this stuff and if the lorry goes awol its a pain in the ass! report it asap, the companies will criticise you if you wait say 2 weeks.

Their driver openly admitted it at the scene, he was as good as gold to be fair! The Police could possibly back me up as well, if for some reason, he did turn round and play 'not guilty'?

Surely your premium won't be affected as it isn't your fault?

phone the company of the lorry driver first to see what they want to do but just make sure you tell them you want a decision within a few hours or your just gonna go through the insurance anyway Smile

they can either pay you direct or take the big hike on the insurance premium next time they renew Wink

I thought the company that owned the hgv that hit me might want to be reasonable but no, and sadly, if their based in Poland I doubt they will even read any letters you send. Best thing to do is speak to your insurance and give them all the info you have. They usually try get the acceptance of liability within 30 days, after that your pretty much stuffed, however they will contact you and ask if you would like to continue the claim using your own cover to pay for the repairs. At this point you can always say no and not have a 'at fault' claim on your account.
