If you have swapped them over and it doesn't light sounds like a internal fault(bit of soldiering can cure)
Note they only light up when sidelights are on or headlights

What? Why?
I have a digital climate control that will only light the buttons when I turn my stalk control to headlights or sidelights only

there's no need for the climate control buttons to be backlit in the daytime, if its to dark to see the buttons then its going to be dark outside to see where your going so you turn the headlamps on which in turn will light up the climate control buttons.

Its annoying that the central display on the CC dims when the lights are on though.

You can probably sort that by finding the 12v feed that enters the CC when the sidelights are turned on, then disconnecting it and securing it to ground (so the pin isn't left floating).

It would make more sense for the centre dash to dim in that case?
