Herro
Since getting my 206 1.1 petrol, the speedo had a tendancy to work fine when driving, an get worse over a period of driving. (the needle arm not being smooth, sometimes, I would come off slip roads and the needle would just get stuck, or even stop at 0mph and not show anything !)
So I heard about the sensor located on the gearbox out shaft. I took it out and cleaned the terminals and put it back in.
This solved the following problems; the speedo is now alot smoother, it never stops to operate, and is consistent.
However, there is something alot worse now.
The speedo is 20-25mph to slow, when not moving, the needle is at 6 o clock on the display. so when going 50mph, my clock reads 25-30 mph.
so to summarise, the needle is smooth and is always smooth, but is reading far to slow.
Any one got any fixes I can try?
edit: rev clock is fine, infact I am currently reading my speed from the revs, gear ratio ect

Perhaps a new speed sensor is required?

Perhaps, however after cleaning it, the original problems which provoked me to clean it in the first place are gone, replaced by something new.
I assume the speedo sensor will need replacing soon, but being 25mph out Do i need to recalibrate the needle? after all, I did unplug it and have it out for a few mins.
since there is no pin stopping my needle to drop right down, I assume it is a mutli-plex clock?

Sounds like someone has pulled the needle off and put it back on in the wrong position... What type of indicator stalk do you have square ( non plex ) round ( plex ).

Hi Dilon
The tips and the profile of the stalks are round.
is this what you mean?
Also, when getting frustrated with the needle before cleaning the sensor, I would sometimes tap the clear plastic to see what would happen, does would sometimes jump the needle and make it work again for a short while.

Yep the round stalks mean you have a multiplexed Peugeot. I doubt tapping it would dislodge the needle. But it does sound like it has lost it's calibration, they are a pain to get right might be easier to get a whole new unit. Just get one with lower miles, the bsi will reset to the correct mileage. Just check the number of plugs you have oh and whether it's petrol or diesel.

Is calibration a process of removing the needle and placing it where I assume the 0mph point may be?

Basically yes but you can get the pin into the correct position by turning the ignition on, then placing the needle back on, turning the ignition back off and refitting the unit, you do have to be very careful removing the needle for the first time, but it sounds like it has already been off.

Ive skimmed pretty much most of the thread, but check the teeth on the gearbox sensor.
That or replace the speedo unit
